Why New Zealand is one of the best value Incentive Destinations for Australians Right Now
Why New Zealand is one of the best value Incentive Destinations for Australians Right Now.
A Q&A with Rob McDonald.
When it comes to incentive travel and business events, few destinations offer the balance of accessibility, quality, and memorable experiences quite like New Zealand.
With a favourable exchange rate for Australians, world-class hospitality, and experiences that rival destinations much further afield, New Zealand is delivering exceptional value right now.
We sat down with Rob McDonald, Managing Director of HQNZ to discuss why Australian planners should be taking a fresh look across the Tasman.
Rob, we’re hearing a lot about New Zealand offering strong value right now. What’s driving that?
The biggest factor is the exchange rate. Australian clients are finding their budgets are stretching significantly further than they have in recent years.
What we’re seeing is organisations able to upgrade experiences, enhance accommodation options, and invest more into memorable programme elements without significantly increasing overall spend. For planners under pressure to demonstrate value, that’s creating a real opportunity.
Beyond currency, what makes New Zealand a smart choice for Australian groups?
Proximity is a major advantage.
Delegates can be in New Zealand within a few hours from most Australian cities, with minimal time difference and no jet lag. That means less travel fatigue, more time for programs, and better return on investment.
You don’t lose valuable days getting people to and from the destination, which is a significant consideration for corporate groups, and ideal for those with shorter programs.
How does New Zealand compare with longer-haul destinations when it comes to experience delivery?
The beauty of New Zealand is the concentration of experiences.
Within a relatively compact area, groups can enjoy luxury lodges, spectacular scenery, unique cultural experiences, adventure activities, award-winning food and wine, and sophisticated event venues. Programs feel incredibly diverse without spending excessive time or budget on internal transfers.
A common piece of feedback from Australian clients is that we had overlooked NZ because it was so close and didn’t seem as exotic as some destinations. What we got was the best feedback from any program we have done anywhere in the world, the incredible combination of spectacular food & wine, friendly people, beautiful scenery and incredible array of activities was a true winner.
Are you seeing particular regions stand out for incentive and corporate groups?
Queenstown remains a favourite because it offers such a wide variety of experiences in one destination.
However, we’re also seeing strong interest in Auckland, Rotorua, Hawke’s Bay, Christchurch and the wider South Island.
Since opening our office in Auckland, we’re seeing more associations & corporate meetings exploring Auckland due to the easy accessibility and value for money.
What surprises Australian clients most when they visit New Zealand?
Many are surprised by the quality and sophistication of the business events product.
The accommodation, event infrastructure, culinary scene and destination management expertise are world class. Clients often arrive expecting great scenery and leave impressed by the professionalism and creativity of the experiences available.
There’s also a genuine warmth and authenticity that creates strong emotional connections with delegates.
What’s your message to Australian event planners considering New Zealand for their next programme?
Don’t assume that because New Zealand is close to home, it won’t feel special.
The destination delivers – and right now, Australian budgets can achieve more than many planners realise.
If you’ve not reviewed New Zealand recently, now is the perfect time to take another look.
