Covering an area of about 1,010,000 sq km, Egypt is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west. Egypt is one of the most populous countries in Africa and the Middle East, with the great majority of its estimated 79 million people living near the banks of the Nile River where the only arable land is found. The large areas of the Sahara Desert are sparsely inhabited. About half of Egypt's residents live in urban areas, with most spread across the densely populated centres of greater Cairo, Alexandria and other major cities in the Nile Delta. Egypt is famous for its ancient civilization, with famous monuments such as the Giza pyramid complex and its Great Sphinx. Its ancient ruins, such as those of Memphis, Thebes, and Karnak and the Valley of the Kings outside Luxor, are a significant focus of archaeological study.

About Egypt

Egypt has been known as the cradle of civilization for centuries and also a cradle for inspiration; the source of many people's discoveries and experiences. Egypt has a landscape which is surprisingly varied, but all of the terrain derives from a combination of water and sky, cultivation and desert.

Pharaonic nations, ancient Greeks, Romans, Christians and Arab dynasties have all played their part in fashioning Egypt’s architectural wealth. Egypt presents the visitor with many striking contrasts, particularly in its landscape and in the ancient, Christian and Islamic elements of its heritage. Signs of Westernization and tradition are sometimes found in a wonderfully incompatible combination, bur more usually the new is adapted to blend harmoniously with the old. The country itself is united by the great river which flows down its entire length and which indeed the creator of the country.

Egypt Highlights

Cairo – The Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum & Tahrir (Liberation) Square
Cairo is an amazing city full of life and movement, and it is that way almost 24 hours a day.  It is impossible to accurately describe Cairo fairly; it is truly one of a kind.  There are no more famous ancient sites within Egypt, or for that matter elsewhere in the world, than the Great Pyramids. Egypt has more than 100 pyramids that are spread all over the country. The three most well known are the ‘Pyramids of Giza’; these pyramids were built on the outskirts of Cairo but are nowadays engulfed by the city.  Tahrir (Liberation) Square is not just the address of the Egyptian Museum that exhibits 120 000 pieces of the best collection from ancient Egypt; it’s the square of freedom where the Egyptian revolution aroused on 25 January 2011. Have a walk in Tahrir square and get the feel of the revolution!

Luxor – East & West Banks
Luxor is a living museum with vast numbers of ancient Egyptian monuments. With its temples and tombs that are highly oriented globally, and might be thought of in the same regard as a theme park, where the attractions just happen to be real monuments.

Aswan - Abu Simbel
Egypt’s southernmost city sits on the banks of a particularly beautiful stretch of the Nile, decorated with palm-fringed islands and flotillas of white-sailed feluccas. Associated with the Nubian people, a distinct ethnic group with their own language and customs, the town is more African in character than the cities of the north.  Not only are the two temples at Abu Simbel among the most magnificent monuments in the world but their removal and reconstruction was an historic event in itself.

Western Desert – The Oasis
Experience the incredible views and expanses of the Sahara, The Great Sea of Sand, the White Desert and the Western Desert. A once in a lifetime adventure, crossing towering sand dunes, fertile oasis and imposingly vast landscapes.  Oasis was originally an Egyptian word (from the Coptic "Waha") and Egypt's oases are still the most varied in the world, each with a special character of its own.

Alexandria –Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Lies North of Egypt, It could in fact be argued that this area extends to Marsa Matruh to the west on the North coast. The area has a Mediterranean feel about it with a special Greek touch; as it was selected by Alexander the Great as the capital of his empire in 320 BC, and it soon became the most powerful and influential city in the region.
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a wonderful reincarnation of the famed ancient library of Alexandria. The original library held the largest collection of manuscripts in the world and was a great center of learning for 600 years until it burned down in the 3rd century. The dramatic new library, resembling an angled discus or a great sundial, was designed by a Norwegian architect.
